Expert Profile
Muhamad Shirwan Abdullah Sani is a registered chemist with a PhD in Halal Products Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He brings extensive expertise in halal product science, having previously worked for the Department of Chemistry, Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. In this role, he contributed to various projects, including being an expert witness in environmental enforcement cases and developing methods for oil spill analysis.
In addition to his technical background, Muhamad Shirwan is a certified trainer and consultant in halal assurance systems, accredited by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRDC). His international experience includes conducting halal-related training and audits in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Pakistan.
Currently, Muhamad Shirwan's work focuses on data analytics for halal authentication, particularly on research and teaching in this area. He leads courses on method validation and verification in chemical measurement, multivariate data analysis in food studies, statistical analysis for testing laboratories and scientific research, and measurement uncertainty for testing laboratories. His expertise also extends to biomarkers analysis using GCMS and chemometrics for source authentication and the analysis of oil extracts via FTIR spectroscopy combined with multivariate data analysis to ensure halal authentication.
He is a registered chemist with the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry. He is currently the Deputy Dean of Postgraduate and Responsible Research at the International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
Muhamad Shirwan has been appointed by the Malaysia Halal Analysis Centre (MyHAC), JAKIM, as a referred personnel for fat- and protein-based analyses using analytical instruments and chemometrics. Furthermore, he contributes to the halal industry as a working group committee member for developing chemical test methods related to halal certification. He is involved in drafting the Malaysian Standard ‘Consumable goods – Test method - Identification of pig skin and hair' and Malaysian Standard ‘Authentication of Products using Chemometric Techniques’.
