Expert Profile
Dr. Lau Zhe Wei has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Madani Studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) since 2018. He holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, with a thesis titled “De-ethnicisation of Politics in Malaysia.” He earned both his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), with dissertations titled “Political Survivability of MCA and DAP Post-2008 General Election” and “The 2008 General Election: A Case Study in Penang,” respectively.
Dr. Lau’s research interests include Malaysian politics, elections, as well as political developments in Hong Kong and Taiwan. He is the recipient of several awards and fellowships, including the Taiwan Fellowship by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taiwan (2025), the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Scholars by the U.S. Department of State (2019), and an Academic Traineeship jointly awarded by IIUM and the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (2013). In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Lau is frequently consulted by both Malaysian and international media for his expert insights and analyses on political developments.
