Expert Profile
Sayyed Mohamed Muhsin is an Associate Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he currently serves as Head of the Department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh. His scholarship lies at the nexus of Islam and biomedicine, with a particular focus on how Islamic juristic principles can inform and enrich contemporary bioethical discourse.
He holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Calicut and an MA in Islamic Jurisprudence from Darul Huda Islamic University, India. He later pursued advanced postgraduate studies at IIUM, where he earned a second MA with a thesis on Islamic legal interpretation in Muslim-minority contexts, and subsequently a PhD with a dissertation on Islamic Medical Jurisprudence, specifically examining the juristic-ethical dimensions of biomedical practices and healthcare policies.
He is the author of three books and over twenty peer-reviewed articles indexed in WoS and Scopus, addressing a wide range of medico-juristic questions. In addition to his academic writing, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Islamonweb-English and leads the Medico-Fiqh Institute project, dedicated to advancing scholarship in Islamic medical jurisprudence and ethics.
Over the past five years, he has secured eleven research grants at the international, national, and university levels. In 2025, he was awarded the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) amounting to RM134,700 by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia for his project entitled “Establishment of a Maqāṣid-Based Islamic Bioethical Framework for Sharīʿah-Compliant Healthcare Policies and Modern Medical Practices in Malaysia.” In the same year, he received the prestigious Innovative Curriculum Design and Delivery (AKRI) Award—an annual national award conferred by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia—in recognition of his project “Enhanced Learning Activities,” which advances transformative teaching methodologies.
